Description

Typed script for act I, scene 2 of Meredith Willson's The Music Man, part of a very early draft of the musical. In the River City High School assembly room, citizens gather for the town's Fourth of July celebration, with Marcellus Washburn serving as entertainment chairman. Eulaly Breen directs a chorus of children and plays the piano, and Oliver Hix and Marion Maddy give a report on the ticket sales. George Breen and Oliver discuss the arrival of Professor Harold Hill, who appears and announces his intention to form a boys' band. Marion and Harold have a conversation about Chicago, but he offends her. Musical numbers in the scene include "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean," "You Never Miss the Water Till the Well Runs Dry," "True-Hearted Whole-Hearted," "Washington Post March," "Gary, Indiana," "America," "Till I Met You," and "I Want to Go to Chicago."
